EXTANT MURALS & SCULPTURES FROM THE GOVERNMENT ART PROJECTS OF THE 1930s IN NEW YORK

The following map (not shown on-line, but a list is provided) gives some idea of the distribution of project works over the State and indicates the geographical divisions into which this list is divided: Central and Western New York, Eastern New York- the counties North of New York City bordering the Hudson East and West, Long Island, and New York City by borough. Only surviving murals and sculptures are included whether from the earliest City relief program for artists or from the large federal projects. Many pieces were designed but never executed and even more have since been lost or destroyed, so this list represents only part of the total work of the projects in the State. Also, a number of works of 1930s public art-murals in the post offices at Albany, Flushing, and White Plains for example-were paid for from building funds, but were not part of federal project activity. They are not included here.

Information for this list was gathered from many sources over a period of two years. Main sources were the records in the Art Commission Archives in New York City and the National Archives in Washington, D.C., but to compile the list we, the research assis- tants and photographers traveled over the State, inter- viewed many artists, made countless phone calls and wrote hundreds of letters. With the help of many people we have made the following as complete and accurate as possible, but it may still contain errors and omissions about which we would appreciate more information.

All these works were created both to give work to unemployed artists and to bring as many people as possible into a new and sometimes daily relationship with art. Some of the works are treasured and care- fully preserved, but others are in danger of destruction. We hope that this list will not only give some sense of the intentions and reach of government patronage in the 1930s, but also that it will engage public concern so that more works can be preserved, restored and enjoyed.

Unless otherwise noted works listed are murals. Since many are difficult to measure, some sizes are approximate or missing.
