Shortly after becoming principal of the Newark Valley High School in 1983, Robert E. Gwinn discovered 25 paintings on school property. According to school board minutes of a meeting held September 2, 1936, the paintings were purchased from WPA headquarters in New York City. They were chosen by school administrators for their suitability to hang in an elementary or high school classroom.
