The Rome Cemetery Website
The Kingsley Chapel at the entrance to the Rome Cemetery
Welcome to the Rome Cemetery website. The purpose of this web site is to raise
awareness for an often overlooked aspect of Rome's history. Dedicated
in 1853, the Rome Cemetary was established during the Rural Cemetery Movement
, and is an elegant example of a true Victorian "Rural Cemetrey". One
of over thirty Rural Cemeteries founded in rising mid-19th century cities
across New York State, Rome Cemetery was established for many reasons. A vogue
solution to the over crowding and unsanitary conditions of the old city graveyard
on James Street now called Fort Stanwix Park, Rome Cemetery provided
a park-like destination outside of the city. In essence, Rural Cemeteries like
ours provided a respite from the hectic pace of 19th century city life.
