For support in planning
the project as well as teaching kids the process of oral history
we recommend Talking Gumbo: An Oral History Manual for Secondary
School Teachers and the accompanying video, You've Got to
Hear This Story, by the T. Harry Williams Center for Oral History
(http://www.lib.lsu.edu/special/williams/publications.html)
at Louisiana State University.
We also recommend visiting
the website of the Oral History Association. Here teachers can access
information on standards for oral history, links to other oral history
sites, and publications designed to guide oral history projects
in the classroom (http://www.dickinson.edu/oha/).
In the Rome City School
District we have been fortunate to contribute to the historical
record of World War II by collaborating with the New York State
Veterans' Oral History Project. This project was initiated by Governor
George Pataki and is led by Mr. Michael Russert of the New York
State Division of Military and Naval Affairs. (http://www.dmna.state.ny.us.veterans/index.html)
Sixth grade students
at the Lowville Academy and Central School connected wtih veterans,
spouses, and other members of the Lewis County (NY) community to
learn about their roles in World War II, both overseas and on the
homefront. (http://www.lacs-ny.org/ww2/Main_page2.htm)
