A good mural tells a compelling story. In The Underground Railroad, muralist
James Michael Newell presents the classic story of abolitionist"
conductors" and fugitive slaves set in the upstate New York community
of Brockett's Bridge, today known as the village of Dolgeville.
In this activity, we developed a story line and characters from the mural,
wrote and recorded a script, and wrapped it around a series of images
taken from the mural and the modern village of Dolgeville, New York. A
recording of "Steal Away" by the Rome Free Academy Mixed Chorus
was added and a "Digital Story" was produced.
