Frequently Asked Questions

General Information:

  • While inputting text, avoid using non alpha-numeric characters. These characters cause problems with the database. Examples of non alpha-numeric characters include:
    • \ - forward slash
    • / - back slash
    • ' - apostrophe
    • " - quotation mark
    • Ctrl - using the Control key
    • Alt - using the Alt key
  • If you have persistent problems that you are unable to solve using this FAQ, send e-mail to help@lsb.syr.edu and we will assist you.
  • The Apple QuickTime plug-in is required to view the Doldgeville Digital Story.
  • The Macromedia Flash player plug-in is required to view the mural animation on the index page.

Login Questions:

  • How do I sign-up?
    New student users can sign-up by selecting the New User ( )icon and entering the requested information. New users must be approved by the Living SchoolBook staff. Once, a new user has been approved - they may submit new documents to the site.
  • What if I forgot my password?
    Your password will be e-mailed to you by selecting the Click here if you forgot your password link.

Browsing Documents:

  • How do I get to the gallery index?
    You can return to the Gallery Index page by selecting the Gallery () icon.
Viewing a Document:
  • How do I view a document?
    There are two methods to view a document. The first method is by selecting a document from the Gallery page and then selecting the document title. The second method is by performing a keyword search and selecting the document title.
  • What information is stored about the document?

    The following information describes the document:

    • Title: Title of the work of art
    • Artist: Name of the Artist who created the art
    • Medium: Type of medium used in creating the piece
    • Size: Size of the piece
    • Date: Date the piece was finished
    • New Deal Agency: Agency that sponsored the artist
    • Building: Name of building where piece is displayed
    • Address: Street address of building
    • City
    • State
    • County
    • Description of Work and Physical Condition
    • Supporting Literature
    • Artist Information
    • Links
    • Teacher Notes
  • How do I view the image part of the document?
    The image part of the document can be viewed by selecting the title of the document. If the document did not include an image, then no image will be displayed.

Creating a Document:

  • How do I create a Document?
    Only approved users by the Living SchoolBook, are allowed to create Documents. For login information, please view the login section of this FAQ. Approved users can add documents by selecting the Add link on the Gallery index page. Approved users can also edit and delete their own documents.
  • What type of images can I upload?
    You may upload images that are .gif or jpg.

Keyword Search:

  • How do I perform a keyword search?
    A keyword search for may be performed by typing the keyword into the Search box located at the top of every page. The keyword search searches the title, description, artist, username, and city fields in the database.
