The musk ox is a large shaggy animal that weighs up to 900 pounds. Both sexes have horns on the forehead. The bulls have a gland under their eyes that leaves a musky odor when rubbed on branches of bushes or trees. |
We observed the musk ox for about five minutes. It was drinking water and trying to break the ice. It walked around pacing back and forth.
The musk ox lives in the tundra biome. In the tundra biome it is very muggy, wet, grassy, and sunny. |
The musk ox has a thick, heavy coat to help insulate it from the cold. It is sometimes hard for the musk ox to drink because of cold weather. The water may freeze and then the musk ox has to break the ice in order to get the unfrozen water to drink. Its hooves are well adapted for this. |
