General Information

The lynx is classified as a mammal. It is considered part of the cat family. The lynx has large paws and long legs so it does not fall through the snow while chasing after its prey. It also has very big eyes. The lynx jumps on its prey for food. It eats small rodents and also eats fish. It is a very good swimmer and hunts for its food in the middle of the night.

Comments from zoo observation

We couldn't really see our animals because they were sleeping behind a fallen log. Once in a while they would perk their heads up to see what was going on but then laid back down not to awake for another hour or so.

Niche/Habitat

The lynx lives on rocks and under fallen trees. In the night it hides near little animals' homes so when the animal gets ready to go home the lynx will pounce on it and have supper. It is a carnivore.

Adaptations

The Lynx has quite a big territory. And he can adapt to it very well. He has a territory from 4 to 100 square miles. It lives a solitary life except in the mating season when it will go look for another place to live and have pups of its own.

Environmental Change

The lynx is always on sort of a see-saw. It eats small animals such as the hare (rabbit). The population of the hare would go down because the lynx would keep eating the hares and they would become scarce. When the lynx population goes down, the population of the hares will rise again, providing more food for the lynx. The population of the lynx would then rise again.
