Chinchilla laniger

General Information

The chinchilla laniger is commonly known as the chinchilla. Its habitat within the biome is in the mountains. Its body grows to an average of 10 inches long with a 4 inch tail.

The chinchilla's fur is gray on the underside and gradually gets darker on the back. When it gets upset, it chatters. The chinchillas is a vegetarian. It doesn't hibernate or migrate because its large ears protect it from snow or rain. Female chinchillas are larger than male chinchillas. Chinchillas weigh an average of 1-2 pounds.

Comments from Zoo Observations

When the lady at the zoo was holding the chinchilla, it was trying to get away, but was really calm unlike what we had expected. The chinchilla's whiskers were shaking because it was scared to be in a new environment.

Niche/Habitat

Chinchillas are known to live in families. Chinchillas are commonly found in South America in the Andes Mountains.

Adaptations

The zoo keeper told us that when a chinchilla moves from the mountains to the zoo, it adapts very well. The ears take in heat when it is hot and let it flow out like an air conditioner. In cold weather its ears help keep it warm.

Environmental Change

An environmental change does not affect the chinchilla as it might affect other animals because it adapts very well to its surroundings.
