On this site, teachers and students discover and display dramatic local and regional history that is indigenous to upstate and central New York. This is original student work and is presented in unedited format.

ORAL HISTORY In the Rome City School District, we have been fortunate to contribute to the historical record of World War II by collaborating with the New York State Veterans' Oral History Project. This project was initiated by Governor George Pataki and is led by the Colonel Robert H. von Hasseln of the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs.
LOCAL HISTORY The Local History Database is a teaching resource designed to provide practitioners with a venue for collecting and sharing local history documents and related questions for student investigations.
HISTORY OF SYRACUSE LABOR COUNCIL Labor history is an important component of the Social Studies curriculum. An eleventh grade teacher, Tom Henry at Liverpool High School is eager to have his students learn about history through local events and historical documents.
THE CITY OF SYRACUSE THROUGH POSTCARDS AND PHOTOGRAPHS 12th grade students at the Carnegie School, illustrate their local history through an interactive tour of the city. Using Onondaga County Historical Postcards as a resource, the students create and construct a virtual tour of the city. In addition, they compare and contrast old and new structures.
ONONDAGA COUNTY HISTORICAL POSTCARDS Over 300 historic postcards from the Onondaga County Public Library collection have been digitized and stored. One hundred and seventy-five of these postcards have been organized and published on-line by 1) site type, 2) location name, and 3) geography. The goal is to create an interactive, user-friendly database and web site. This is a great resource from which to build projects.
THE GREAT CARTHAGE FIRE OF 1884 In October 1884, Carthage, a small community in upstate New York, was devastated by a fire that began in the wood based industries on the western bank of the Black River. Carthage 4th grade students present this exciting point in history through an interactive map. They take you through the city of 1884 and today.
HERKIMER HOUSE This historical site located in Herkimer County lies in the Mohawk Valley region. This house archives a great deal of local history related The Revolutionary War, General Nicholas Herkimer, the Battle of Oriskany, the medicinal gardens, and early Settler life. The site represents a collaborative project between a pair of science and social studies middle school teachers.
UNIQUE RESOURCES OF ONONDAGA COUNTY This site displays the unique natural resources found in Onondaga County. These resources include the Erie Canal, the Camillus Forest and the Nine-Mile Creek. This site was created by undergraduate students at Syracuse University's Soling Project.
LOWVILLE LOCAL HISTORY Lowville, located in Lewis County in upstate New York, has a great deal of local history that is brought to life by 4th grade students. The project includes learning that utilizes didactic classroom teaching, with a walking tour and creative, student narratives. This project in in its early stages.
