Barbara A. Shelly

Barbara Shelly, the LSB Project Director, received an Ed.D. in Instructional Design Development &Evaluation from Syracuse University and a B.A. in Mathematics Education from SUNY Albany. Barbara has professional experience as a Secondary Mathematics Teacher, Computer Applications Teacher, Computer Coordinator, and National Science Foundation Teacher Enhancement Grant Co-Director. She has given many workshops and presentations on the role of technology in teaching and learning at the local, state, and national levels. During her teaching career, Barbara received an Outstanding Teacher Award for Educational Excellence in Technological Innovation from the New York State Association for Computers and Technologies in Education and an Excellence in Teaching from the School of Education at Syracuse University. As Project Director, Barbara brings her experience as a computer using educator, with particular expertise in the area of integrating technology into the everyday classroom environment, and an ability to build collaborative learning environments to the Living Schoolbook She works closely with school administrators and classroom teachers to facilitate the use of technology in support of learning.


Edward A. Kiewra

Edward Kiewra, the business manager for the Living SchoolBook and related technology integration projects, received his M.A. in Education from Pepperdine University, his B.A. in Chemistry from Hofstra University, and is a Ph.D. candidate in Higher Education Administration at Syracuse University. Prior to joining the Living SchoolBook Project, he was the program assistant for a number of years for the Schools and University Partnership for Educational Responsibility (SUPER) program, a collaborative professional development endeavor between Syracuse University and area school districts. He also served for over 20 years as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Army in a wide range of assignments. He brings a wealth of managerial experience to the Living SchoolBook, as well as a close association with local school administrators and teachers.


Susan O'Brien

Susan O'Brien received her A.A.S. Degree in Business Administration and has work experience as Administrative Assistant for Continuing Education at OCM BOCES, and as Accounts Payable Assistant at City Electric Co. Inc. Susan joined the Living SchoolBook staff as Project Assistant in February of 2001. She brings a variety of staff support experience to the LSB Community, and enjoys providing administrative as well as, secretarial support to all Living SchoolBook staff members.



Matt Fidler
Secondary Social Studies Teacher

Matt Fidler has been a social studies teacher in the Rome City School District since 1974 and has taught at each grade level from 7-12. As a participating teacher with the LSB, Matt developed the New Deal Art Project, an interdisciplinary investigation in which students learn to interpret and preserve public art of the New Deal Era. For the 2001-2002 school year, Matt will continue to be a teacher on special assignment for the Rome City School District, half of his time working for the LSB and half as a technology integration specialist in Rome. At the LSB one of MattŐs functions is to offer the perspective of the classroom teacher, particularly secondary social studies. That helps as we plan our support for teachers in the classroom because he understands the demands and constraints of the job. MattŐs duties here at The Living SchoolBook include supervising the Field Coordinators as they work with teachers; he helps plan conferences and summer institutes; and he works directly with several teacher projects. These projects include: the Syracuse Labor Council , Homer Local History , Finger Lakes-Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance (FLLOWPA), Local History Documents Database.

Sean Keesler

Sean operated and maintained electronic equipment as well as operated the reactor plant onboard a submarine during a six year Navy enlistment. Pursuing a career change after his military obligation, he worked for two years in a technical support position. He now studies Forest Biology at SUNY ESF. Sean acts as Science Field Coordinator for The Living SchoolBook as well as providing technical support for the group.

 


Maria Rioux

Maria is a Syracuse native who received her B.A. in English and a minor in Speech Communications from Syracuse University in the Spring of 2001. She is now moving on to a Master's of Science degree at Syracuse University in the College of Information Science and Technology's program in Information Management and expects to graduate in the year 2003. Though she seems to love living in her hometown, she is an avid fan of traveling to other major cities, in attempts to figure out where to go after graduation. Maria's tasks for the T4 include writing for the website and providing technical support for the Dialogue Project.

 


Andrew S. Nagy

Andrew is currently an Information Management and Technology major at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies with a minor in Computer Engineering. Andrew has served as a Web Developer at Refinery, Inc - a top 100 web development firm - and also with Global Internet Management Corp., both located in the Philadelphia area. Responsible for building and designing web applications with a database backend. He is also involved with our research and development efforts in dynamic web development here at The Living SchoolBook.

Wunmi Atewologun

Wunmi Atewologun is a recent graduate of the Computer Graphics program in the School of Visual And Performing Arts at Syracuse University. A native of Brooklyn, this young dashing boy employs his artistic and programming skills to create digital media for LSB. Wunmi provides creativity, and contemporary substance to the development of LSB. Wunmi is currently working on the Dialogue project.


Graeme Wagoner-Lynch

Graeme Wagoner-Lynch is working on a BID in industrial design in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. Graeme hails from the southern Maine coast, and along with art, Graeme devotes his time to mountain biking, skiing, and all things automotive. Graeme spends his time at the LSB jumping between graphics, flash design, and creating and publishing webpages. Graeme's favorite cereal is Qwisp.

Andy Walker
Illustrator/ Web-Developer

Andy Walker is a recent grad of the Syracuse Univerisity Illustration program. A local of Syracuse, Andy enjoys shiny things and toys that have moving parts. He plans on pursuing a career as a freelance illustrator in the fall in New York City.

 


Jennifer McDonald
Field Coordinator

Jennifer McDonald is earning her M.S. in secondary Social Studies Education at SU. She has her B.A. in International Relations from Wellesley College. As a field coordinator at the LSB, Jenn works with teachers to develop their technology project ideas and connect them with resources to make their ideas a reality. Jenn is interested in History and Politics and will be working on the Local History and History through New York State Art themes within the Living SchoolBook. Jenn is currently working on Social Studies based projects that incorporate
everything from scanning images to digital stories.

 


Chengetai Masango

Chengetai is a graduate student in International Relations at the Maxwell School and Telecommunications and Network Management in the school of Information Science and Technology. He has a undergraduate degree in Information Technology and Management from Syracuse University and Business Computer Programming from Zimbabawe. He has had a wide range of experience in computer programming and consulting.

 


Karen Conahan

Karen Conahan is a graduate student earning her M.S. in secondary
Mathematics Education at SU. Karen decided to change careers and become a teacher after being a software engineer for twenty years. Karen's love for mathematics and learning has brought her to Syracuse University. Karen earned a B.S. in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from the State University of New York at Albany and an A.S. in Liberal Arts from Morrisville Agriculture & Technology College. Karen brings a vast knowledge and experience to The Living SchoolBook. Her work experience has included companies such as Carrier, General Electric, Xerox, and Diagnostics Medical Instructments. Karen designs, codes, creates the database applications, and tests the following Web Sites on the LSB projects:; Local History, Time Machine, and the Dialogue Project.

Evan Einstein
Senior Web Applications Developer

Evan recently graduated a semester early from the Syracuse University School of Engineering and Computer Science with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering and minors in both Engineering Management and Computer Science. He has been programming for many years and even owns and runs a successful web development firm, Elkweb Information Systems, LLC, where he is responsible for managing operations and programming an array of applications in a variety of languages. At the Living Schoolbook, Evan is a lead web and database programmer for a number of current ongoing projects, where he continues to be a valuable asset to the team


Michael Heroux
Web Design Consultant

Michael has a BA in English and Secondary Education from Syracuse University. He is currently working on his Masters in Instructional Design, Development, and Evaluation, with a concentration in web accessibility and clean interface design. He grew up in Maine and loves to snowboard, read and listen to AC/DC. He brings his knowledge of web and CDROM developing to The Living SchoolBook.


Sam Brosnan
Animator/Graphic Designer

Sam Brosnan is a recent graduate of the Computer Graphics department in Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts. He grew up in Midcoast Maine, playing in the woods by day and drawing by night. His main interest now is animation. He works at the Living SchoolBook, creating animation, graphics, illustrations, and digital video for the web and CD-ROM based projects. His favorite breakfast cereal is Crispy Hexagons.


Becky Gloss
Field Coordinator

Becky graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental and Forest Biology from SUNY ESF. She has worked as a field researcher and as a naturalist/educator, trying to promote a sense of environmental stewardship to kids. Aside from these interests, Becky is also a budding singer/songwriter. She works as a field coordinator for the LSB, applying her science background to projects here. She hopes to continue her education next fall by beginning a Master's program in Environmental Science.


Steven T. Bossert
Principal Investigator

Steven T. Bossert is Principal Investigator for the Living SchoolBook. Currently, he is Professor of Education and Quondam Dean, having led the School of Education from 1990-2000. He directs several technology integration projects, including The LSB and the new PT3 Grant for teacher education. Dr. Bossert holds a Ph.D. in the sociology of education from the University of Chicago. Prior to coming to SU, he served as professor and chair of the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Utah (1983-90), as director of research and development at the Far West Laboratory (1980-83), and as an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Michigan (1974-79). He has published on such topics as school effectiveness, leadership, and cooperative learning.


Douglas Elznic
Systems Administrator

Douglas Elznic is an undergraduate Political Science major. He is planning on receiving a Masters in Public Administration and a Masters in Information Science Technology. Doug is currently deciding between going ".edu" or ".com." Doug spends his free time studying radical politics, playing with Linux, chess, and his two dogs, Plato & Freedom. Meanwhile, at LSB Doug is responsible for maintaining the current network infrastructure and planning and implementing future upgrades. He also handles the sececurity, preformance, upgrades, network design, network implementation and architecture of the LSB website.


Chris Conrad
Database Programmer

Studying Computer Engineering with a minor in computer science at LC Smitch College of Engineering and Computer Science, Chris spent two summers working for Ericsson, Inc. Data Product Division in Research Triangle Park, NC. Currently, he is designing and developing new databases for LSB and setting up the infrastructure to integrate those databases with the web site.

Kirstin Reynolds
Field Coordinator

A graduate student in English Education at Syracuse University, Kirstin received a B.A. in English from the University at Buffalo and studied Spanish at El Centro Bilingue in Mexico. She has worked as a counselor for the Fresh Air Fund, the Adolescent and Teen Program Director at H.E.L.P. Bronx, a homeless shelter in New York, and a middle school multimedia and writing teacher in NYC. At T4, Kirstin serves as a Field Coordinator, working closely with School of Education faculty to plan and execute an electronic learning community. As well as a close association with local school administrators and teachers.


Patti Cappelletti
Field Coordinator

Patti received her B.A. in Sociology from LeMoyne College in 1996. She is currently enrolled in Syracuse University's Master's in School Counseling Program. Before returning to graduate school she worked in Boston, Massachusetts for three years. She worked for two years as a financial counselor at a college and one year as a web architect at an internet development company. She brings her web development skills and education background to the Living SchoolBook.


Dara Wexler
Field Coordinator and Research Assistant

Dara Wexler received her B.A. in Psychology and Communications at the University of Michigan, her M.S. in Cultural Foundations of Education at Syracuse University, and is a Ph.D candidate in Cultural Foundations of Education at Syracuse University. Her research interests include media and technology, popular culture, and media literacy. In her sixth year as a LSB staff member, she has served as a Field Coordinator at the Living Schoolbook, assisting teachers and LSB staff in the use of technology and the generation of dynamic web environments. She is currently researching copyright issues for teachers' projects.

 


Jeanne Schmidt
Project Assistant

Jeanne Schmidt received her A.A.S. Degree in Executive Secretarial Science with Legal Option and has work experience as a Family Court Deputy Clerk, Legal Stenographer for Onondaga County Department of Law, and a Paralegal for John Manzano, Esq. She provides secretarial and administrative support to all staff members and brings her management of business experience to the Living SchoolBook.


Ping Gao
S.O.E. Field Coordinator

Ping Gao received her B.A. from Shanghai International Studies University, P.R. China and earned her M.A.E.; Educational Psychology Teaching and M.S.; Educational Technology at the University of Northern Iowa. She has over ten years of teaching experience at the high school and college levels, and is a Ph.D candidate at the School of Education, majoring in Teaching Curriculum with a minor in IDD&E. Ping Gao continues to bring her extensive web development skills benefiting the School of Education faculty through development of the Teaching and Leadership website.


Wendy Brady
Field Coordinator

Wendy Brady received her B.A. from the University of Connecticut in English and Anthropology while playing field hockey for the Huskies. She came to Syracuse in 1998 as a field hockey graduate assistant coach. After coaching Syracuse's field hockey team for two years, Wendy came to the Living SchoolBook in May, 2000, as a field coordinator, while she finishes up her English degree and a second M.A. in magazine journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Communications. Wendy brings her English, anthropology and journalism background to The Living SchoolBook, as well as her coaching and athletics experience.


Timothy OShea
Systems Administrator

Tim is a reviewer for Network Computing Magazine, an independent Networking and Security Consultant for numerous firms, and has several years experience as a computer consultant on the Syracuse University campus. At the LSB, Tim designs and implements solutions as a Systems Administrator and provides technical support across the LSB infrastructure.

Jonathan B. Cheney
Technical and Computing Support LSB

While pursuing his BS in Computer Science and Mathematics, and BA in Religion, Jonathan Cheney has worked with numerous teams providing computing support for the Syracuse University Community. Jonathan plans to pursue a Master's Degree in Computer Science after completion of his Bachelor's.

Kenny Pascal
Graphic Designer

A graduate of Syracuse University and recipient of the Deans Scholarship Award, Kenny received his BFA in Computer Graphics from the School of Visual and Performing Arts in 1999. He brings his extensive knowledge in both web site design and multi-media interfaces to the Living SchoolBook.

Don Gates
Database Programmer
Don earned his M.S. in Social Studies Education at Syracuse University and a B.S. in Environmental Studies at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He worked with Law and Land Use Development in NY and CA before starting his teaching profession. Don has student taught history and government in middle school and high school settings, and assists teachers and students in incorporating technologies in the classroom as an LSB Field Coordinator. He is also a board member for the Central New York Project Watershed, and was responsible for the developments of the LSB Watershed site and database-driven web projects.

N. Jonnell Henry-Matos
Field Coordinator
Jonnell is completing her Ph.D. in Counseling and Human Services in Education at Syracuse University. She earned a CAS in School Administration from SUNY Cortland, a MSE in Counseling from Alfred University, and a B.A. in Psychology with minors in Business Management and Marketing. She has worked extensively with both K-12 and university practitioners, has experience creating web sites and databases, and brought her background in publications and long-range planning to the project as a Field Coordinator.


Sarah Palefsky
Public Relations, Designer

A recent graduate of Syracuse University, Sarah Palefsky earned her B.S. in Advertising from the Newhouse School of Communications. She has worked with public relations in Account Management at DiMassimo, Inc, NYC and at the LSB, Sarah created the publicity and promotional materials to further project development.
