Living SchoolBook Historical Overview: 1994-1999


Original Objectives:
  • Defining how new communication technologies will enhance the quality of teaching and learning in New York's elementary and secondary schools;
  • Demonstrating the potential to reduce disparities in educational opportunities imposed by the obstacles imparted by distance and location;
  • Providing access to educational resources that currently lie outside the normal means of individual schools;
  • Enhancing the capacity of New York State's teacher education colleges to support the educational uses of high-speed communication networks; And,
  • Illustrating that New York State will support an educational environment that is valued by parents and attractive to industry.


Year 1 (August 1994-1995): "Building"
  • Began initial conversations with schools.
  • Installed fiber connection between SU School of Education, NPAC, and NYNEX.
  • Demos for Stakeholders (e.g. Rome Labs - Governor's Demo);
  • Research and development focus on demonstrating the high end utilization of the LSB's advanced ATM network.
  • Teachers began to develop project outlines and basic pages were put up on the web

(Upstate) LSB Staff: 1 Principal Investigator, 1 Project Director, 1 full time Graduate Assistant.

Teacher Teams: 3 Social Studies, 3 Science, 2 Foreign Language, 3 English, 1 Staff Development, 4 Computer/Math, 2 Art, 3 Administrators.

Partners: Syracuse University School of Education, Columbia University Teachers College, NYNEX, NPAC, Rome Laboratories, Fujitsu, Apple Computers, Silicon Graphics, AskERIC, NYNet.



Year 2 (August 1995 - July 1996): "Disseminating Proof of Concept"
  • Strong emphasis on linking teachers with researchers at NPAC with the School of Education acting as facilitator.
  • Videos were created as project dissemination pieces.
  • Partial funding was provided by NYNEX for SU School of Education multimedia computer lab.
  • Technology control shifts from NPAC to School of Education. As a result, the project experienced an increase in communication via a re-designed web presence.
  • The LSB continued to publicly demo and present various projects in order to futher name recognition (e.g. Demo for Mrs. Pataki).

Year 3 (August 1996 - July 1997): "Building on the Proof of Concept and What We Have Learned"
  • Continued to develop more partnerships and collaborations for projects and infrastructure development.
  • Increased publicity and continued demos and presentations (e.g. Featured in Apple Computer, Inc. 1996 Annual Report).
  • NPAC focused on NII technologies as School of Education focuses on having teachers prototype these technologies.
  • NYNEX/LSB Lab at the School of Education officially opened with multi-platform/multi-network configuration.
  • The LSB experienced an increase in the average number of video conferences per week.
  • In addition, there was an increase in the number of teacher meetings and on-site visits to the project schools.
  • The LSB put a greater focus on teacher projects and collaborations between SU School of Education, K-12 schools and community agencies.
